Common Car Noises

If you own a car, you will agree with me that common car noises are a part of an operating car. Some of these noises are easy to ignore most of the time. For instance, little whines caused by plastic materials as they rub against each other. It’s hard to notice some of these sounds but some noises are not so safe; you should pay attention to them and attend to your car immediately. Your life might be at risk!

Car noises that you shouldn’t ignore

Have you heard any of these noises in your car? What safety measures did you take? Ignoring noises in your vehicle won’t make the sound go away automatically.

· Knocking sound in the engine compartment – Do you use a low-grade fuel for your engine other than the car’s manual specifications? If you use a lower-grade fuel, then your caris at a higher risk of producing engine knock. Stick with the requirements and needs of the car in terms of oil, fuel or tire pressure.

 

· Loud bang – The last time I heard a loud bang in my car, I almost got sick. If you hear a loud bang in your car, friend it’s time to act and act right. The loud bang could have been caused by excessive air – fuel mixture or it could be an indication that the catalytic converter isn’t operating appropriately. Take action immediately!

· Roaring sound that increases with acceleration – If you hear some roaring sound every time you accelerate, you need to check the exhaust system for any damages. Also, transmission issues could be another cause of the roaring sound. Get your vehicle checked.

· Screeching wheels when breaking – Do you hear some squealing sounds every time you apply breaks? It might have been caused by something as simple as dust or dirt on the brake motors, shoes, and pads or damaged pads/shoes. In addition, the sounds could be from a wear indicator on a pad indicating that it’s time for new brake pads. Do not ignore the sign, take the necessary safety precautions.

· Clicking sound from the engine compartment – This is an obvious problem to most cars and the easiest to remedy. Be a mobile mechanic yourself and check the oil level. The engine might be low on oil; it could be a loss of oil pressure in the system or some blockage as a result of dirt in the system. If you have cleared the system of an oil issue, then the valve train could be the problem.

· Scraping when braking – If the screeching or squealing sound when applying breaks has advanced into scraping, that is an indication of one bare metal rubbing against another. It means that every application of the brake pedal is damaging one of the rotors. Take the necessary precaution against this immediately.

· Clunking sound when applying brakes – This is an indication that a brake caliper is damaged, missing or inappropriately mounted.

· Flappy sound – Have you heard a flapping sound when driving? The sound could have been caused by something interfering with the fan or a belt crumbling.

Other sounds that you should pay attention to in a vehicle are;

· Rapping sound underneath the bonnet

· Sounds when turning a corner

· Rattles when accelerating
